The new model proposes Council-owned water and wastewater businesses that will be located in three separate regions of South East Queensland.

Unlike the previous model, consisting of one single distribution business and three retailers, the new model combines both the retail and distribution functions in each new business.

The State Government has proposed that the new combined retail and distribution businesses will be made up of the existing water businesses from the following Councils:

1. Brisbane and Scenic Rim
2. Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Somerset and Sunshine Coast
3. Gold Coast, Redland and Logan

The new combined model means that the existing retail and distribution functions will not be separated from one another when the sub-regional businesses are established.

The timeframe for the establishment of the new businesses and the introduction of the regulatory framework is yet to be finalised based on advice from partnering Councils.

Councils and the State Government remain committed to ensuring job security and the protection of employment entitlements under the new combined distribution and retail model.
